Juanita Cabrera Lopez
Juanita Cabrera Lopez (Maya Mam) Executive Director International Mayan League Juanita is Mam from the Western Highlands of Iximulew (Guatemala). A survivor of the war and genocide in Guatemala and a former political refugee, she brings personal and professional work experience in the defense of Indigenous Peoples’ human rights. She uses international law and organizations, The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and traditional knowledge to develop an Indigenous human rights response in the areas of immigration, land rights, and environmental protection. Juanita works with Maya leaders and elders in Guatemala and the United States through their traditional institutions to address forced Indigenous Peoples’ forced displacement, migration, and climate change. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Indian Law Resource Center and holds a Master of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
